Veterans, students, and emerging professionals unite to advance legal education, community engagement, and the next generation of service-minded leaders.

November 3, 2026 | Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A nationwide team of military veterans, students, and emerging professionals founded the Service Forward Initiative (SFI), a nonprofit initiative dedicated to supporting veterans, service members, and military families through preventative legal education, community outreach, and professional development.

Founded on the belief that leadership is strengthened through service, SFI seeks to create a collaborative network where individuals from diverse academic, military, and professional backgrounds can contribute their talents toward a common mission.

From Military Service to Community Impact

The founding team brings experience from the United States Army and Navy, including military legal assistance, infantry operations, and administrative leadership, alongside the perspectives of students committed to supporting the military community.

Recognizing that the commitment to service extends beyond military careers, the founders envisioned an organization where students and early-career professionals could continue giving back while gaining meaningful experience in leadership, research, writing, project management, and community engagement.

SFI is built on a simple principle: individuals can advance professionally while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Introducing The Service Forward Legal Brief

At the heart of SFI's mission is The Service Forward Legal Brief, its flagship publication dedicated to making legal knowledge more accessible to veterans, service members, and military families.

The publication will feature educational articles authored by law students and legal professionals, with an emphasis on preventative law and practical legal readiness.

Anticipated topics include military family law, estate planning, consumer protection, veterans benefits, employment rights, housing protections, and military-to-civilian transitions.

By encouraging collaboration between students, practicing attorneys, and military legal professionals, the Legal Brief aims to provide reliable educational resources while offering aspiring legal professionals opportunities to strengthen their research, writing, and editorial skills.

Beyond the Legal Brief: Supporting Communities Through Action

In addition to legal education, SFI is developing two complementary initiatives:

Community Outreach Campaign: Collaborative service projects and educational outreach efforts intended to support veterans, military families, and the organizations that serve them.

Veterans Digital Resource Toolkit: Free, accessible educational guides, checklists, and digital materials designed to help military-connected individuals navigate important life transitions and everyday challenges.

Together, these programs will create opportunities for members from numerous academic disciplines and professional backgrounds to contribute.

Building a Network That Grows With Its Members

Unlike traditional student organizations, SFI is designed to support continued involvement beyond graduation.

Students, veterans, and early-career professionals will be invited to participate in virtual meetings, contribute publications, lead projects, collaborate with peers, and pursue professional mentorship opportunities.

As members advance in their careers, they will have opportunities to remain involved as contributors, project leaders, editors, mentors, and advisers.

Membership will be free for students and actively engaged participants, reflecting SFI's commitment to accessibility and inclusive participation.

Looking Ahead

As SFI develops its founding team, publications, and community partnerships, the organization welcomes expressions of interest from students, legal professionals, military veterans, and individuals who share its commitment to public service.

Prospective members can explore opportunities to contribute articles, develop educational resources, participate in community outreach, or help shape the organization's future.

Our service continues. Our impact grows.

Through collaboration, professional development, and a shared commitment to giving back, Service Forward Initiative aims to demonstrate that meaningful leadership begins with service.
